Our Water Filter

Hi everyone!

We are The Rock Stars.

We made water filters today. Here is what we did, in case you want to make one at home. Make sure you do it outdoors so you don’t make a mess!!!

In our water filter we had:

• Cotton (at the bottom of the container that has holes) make sure you cover the container and you can’t see any plastic at the bottom
• Sand (cover the cotton)
• Rocks (you don’t need to cover the sand)
• Charcoal
• Grass (only a little bit)
• Tissue Paper (fold to fit into bottle)
• Rocks again (same type of rocks)

 

Steps

1. Poke holes so when you pour water in it will come back out
2. Put the cottons in first and make sure you can’t see any plastic
3. Put the sand in which covers the cottons
4. Add the rocks in, to cover the sand
5. Break the charcoal into little pieces and put them in after the rocks
6. Now find some grasses that doesn’t cover the whole thing
7. Take a piece of tissue and fold into the size that would fit inside and put it in
8. Now add the rocks again which is the same type of the rocks in step  4
9. Put another bottle underneath the container with holes
10. Take some water from the tap
11. Pour them into the container with the holes
12. Wait and you will see that the water you put in will come out dirtier than the normal water
13. Pour again into a different bucket and put it back underneath the container with holes
14. Now pour the water in the bucket that has holes
15. Wait again and see if it is clean
16. If it is still dirty repeat step 13 & 14 until you get the water clean
17. If it is clean then drink it if it doesn’t have any other stuff in it (make sure it is absolutely clear)

Our class made filters this morning. It was lots of fun.

The container that I brought to school was bigger than the Pump bottle that Yuan brought, so we had to duct tape the sides so water will not drip out.

I brought 2 bottles to school and traded 1 bottle to someone (because they didn’t have a bottle) and they gave some sand back to us. My other teacher, Mrs Figgins came to our class and helped us make the water filter. I hope you have a good time trying  the water filter. Try not to make any big mistakes. :D

It was fun doing the filter but it had its challenges like when we had to find good charcoal and get stones around school.

I loved the experiment.  I would of drunk the water but we weren’t allowed to, because we weren't sure if it was safe or not. I also loved making muddy water!!!

How to Make a Water Filter (Room 5 style!!)

Room 5 did a project where we made our own Water Filters.



Here is how we did it, just in case you'd like to do it yourself.

The ingredients are...

• Sand
• Rocks
• Cotton/Silk
• Grass
• Coal
• bottle
• knife

Instructions:

• Get all the ingredients
• Cut the bottle in 1 quarter
• cut cloth in small pieces
• add sand into the bottle
• add rocks on top of the sand
• add sand onto the rocks
• add grass on top of the sand
• putt cotton on the sand
• punch holes at the bottom with pins (ask parents to help)
• add clean water to clean until it's clean.
• add dirty water if it's dirty put some more clean water though it.

Our group did very well, we thought! We managed to clean the water a lot, but our next step is to figure out how to make it crystal clear like some of the other groups!

Claire found out you can make dirty water into clean water.

Karen J found out that you can make dirty stuff in to clean water.

Vanessa found out that you can make a simple filter with things that are easy to find.

Our Amazing Water Filter

On Monday the 18 we enjoyed creating a water filter. We forgot the bottle (the main ingredient!) so we made a deal with another  group to swap some sand for a bottle.

We had to research the best way to make a filter, before we could get started. 

1. First you get a bottle and cut it near the top and poke tiny holes in the bottom.

2.  Put a layer of cotton on the bottom.

3.  Then place dry sand on top of the cotton make sure it covers all of the cotton.

4.  Crush charcoal into dust then put it on top of the sand (do this activity outside!)

5.  Place a thin peace of material  over the charcoal.

6.   Place the top of the bottle that was cut off and put it underneath the bottle to catch the drips.

7.  Pour water in and enjoy.

We learnt that we always had to try our hardest and never give up - the first time, our filter didn't work at all, so we had to try again and again. If we had given up after the first time, we would have felt like we failed, but by figuring out the problems and fixing them, we ended up with a working filter and we felt soooooooooo proud!

We were amazed that with just a few simple ingredients that we could find around the house, we could make a simple filter that actually works - our final water was clean, germ free and delicious!!

We were surprised that charcoal helped to clean the water. It made our hands so dirty, that we were sure it would turn the water black!

We learnt afterwards that we could have added grass to our filter. A lot of other groups used grass and it helps to clean the water even faster.

We reused water and kept putting it through the filter until it was completely clean and safe to drink. 

We really enjoyed breaking the charcoal because it turns into dust and it was really interesting.

Crazy Filters!!!

Today our group made a water filter. First, we had to research on the internet to find out what we needed to find.

 This is how we did it :

1. First we cut a Coke bottle in half (Adult supervision)

2.Then we poked 5 holes in the bottom of the coke bottle (Adult supervision)

3.Put in the cotton

4.Tip in some sand

5.Put some mini rocks/gravel

6.Put in some coal/charcoal  

7.Put in some fresh grass

8.Put some more cotton on top... DONE

9.get some dirty water and pour it in the water filter

10.Use a container to get the clean water 

11. Do steps 9 and 10 over and over with the same water until it comes out crystal clear

We learnt how to always have clean water, even if our water source is dirty (like if we are stuck in the forest or something!).

We were surprised that charcoal made water crystal clear - we thought it would turn the water black!

We learnt that we needed to put the cotton at the bottom, so that all the dirt and sand wouldn't fall out the holes at the bottom.

We had a lot of fun making our water filter and we learnt a lot. We wish you Good Luck if you decide to make it. Do you think you can make a filter that is as good as, or better than, ours?!

Our Awesome Water Filter.

Our group made an awesome water filter!

 First of all we put cotton in the bottom of our bottle, then we put clean sand on top of it, then we put gravel on top of our sand.

 Last but not least, we cleaned our water filter with clean water until the water came out clean

Then we put muddy water in the top. It took a while for the water to come out, but we got clean water in the end. YIPEE!!! We ROCK!!

We were not sure if it was safe to drink the filtered water or not - we will have to try to figure out a test to see if it is safe or not!

We were surprised to learn that cotton wool is really good at cleaning water. We had to keep washing the filter out, because otherwise the dirt got trapped in the filter and made the water even dirtier! We were so surprised that charcoal was a good filter.

We thought that charcoal would make the water black, not clear!

Our group learnt a lot about perseverance today. The first filter we made didn't clean the water at all. We were discouraged, but we went back to our plans and tried again. Each time we tried, we learnt more about filters, until finally we managed to get clear, drinkable water! We were so proud!
