Oil Spills

Oil spills are a deadly mess that can kill many marine life. Oil spills are caused normally by ships crashing or breaking down.

Oil spills through a hole in the ship and floats on top of the water. This plots the water beneath. The oil can be many colors but when it comes out it is black.

Oil spills are caused in many ways. Some are caused by human mistakes or people being careless. Other ways are equipment breaking down, natural disasters such as hurricanes and storms. They can also be caused by terrorists, countries at war or illegal dumpers.

Oil Spills kill animals in many different ways. Birds get covered in oil and try to clean their feathers and die because the oil is poisonous. The oil can blind birds, which leads to them getting eaten by predators. Birds try to get food and then eats its prey with oil on it, causing the birds to be poisoned. Fish can get poisoned by the pollution that the oil spill causes.

Oil Spill affect the ocean by polluting the water, poisoning the animals that live in the water, and staining the coastline and killing the animals that live on the shore.

  

Oil Spills are awful messes I wish we could find a new way to make oil that is not poisonous.

FISHER AND MICHAEL'S RECYCLING BOMB

Here are some facts about recycling:

• There are 7 different types of plastic
• If you are wondering what to recycle cheek on the bottom of the bottle or container
• If the bottle/container is cross contaminated the whole bin will get put out to land full
• Can you please wash your bottles/container because they stink when they arrive to the recycling satiation   

BYOD Begins!!

On Monday 16 April, the children from Room 5 brought their own devices to school for the first time! We are going to be bringing our own devices from the beginning of term two and Monday was just a chance to try it out. We had an awesome time. Here is what some of students thought about the day.

           

Yuan said BYOD (bring your own device) is a good way to learn new things. He said that it was hard to connect to the internet, but from now on it will be easier. Yuan is disappointed because he cannot play games. He is looking forward to getting new creation apps. Yuan says that not all schools should have BYOD.

Luke says it is cool to have BYOD but it is scary thinking that it could get broken. He says BYOD is easy because it is your own device and there are no log on passwords. Luke says if he could not have an Ipad he would have an Ipod Touch.

  

Maddy said Room 5 and Room 7 were lucky to be able to bring their own device. She would like a Ipad instead of an Ipod. Maddy also said that she thinks all schools should bring their own device.

Our Water Filter

Hi everyone!

We are The Rock Stars.

We made water filters today. Here is what we did, in case you want to make one at home. Make sure you do it outdoors so you don’t make a mess!!!

In our water filter we had:

• Cotton (at the bottom of the container that has holes) make sure you cover the container and you can’t see any plastic at the bottom
• Sand (cover the cotton)
• Rocks (you don’t need to cover the sand)
• Charcoal
• Grass (only a little bit)
• Tissue Paper (fold to fit into bottle)
• Rocks again (same type of rocks)

 

Steps

1. Poke holes so when you pour water in it will come back out
2. Put the cottons in first and make sure you can’t see any plastic
3. Put the sand in which covers the cottons
4. Add the rocks in, to cover the sand
5. Break the charcoal into little pieces and put them in after the rocks
6. Now find some grasses that doesn’t cover the whole thing
7. Take a piece of tissue and fold into the size that would fit inside and put it in
8. Now add the rocks again which is the same type of the rocks in step  4
9. Put another bottle underneath the container with holes
10. Take some water from the tap
11. Pour them into the container with the holes
12. Wait and you will see that the water you put in will come out dirtier than the normal water
13. Pour again into a different bucket and put it back underneath the container with holes
14. Now pour the water in the bucket that has holes
15. Wait again and see if it is clean
16. If it is still dirty repeat step 13 & 14 until you get the water clean
17. If it is clean then drink it if it doesn’t have any other stuff in it (make sure it is absolutely clear)

Our class made filters this morning. It was lots of fun.

The container that I brought to school was bigger than the Pump bottle that Yuan brought, so we had to duct tape the sides so water will not drip out.

I brought 2 bottles to school and traded 1 bottle to someone (because they didn’t have a bottle) and they gave some sand back to us. My other teacher, Mrs Figgins came to our class and helped us make the water filter. I hope you have a good time trying  the water filter. Try not to make any big mistakes. :D

It was fun doing the filter but it had its challenges like when we had to find good charcoal and get stones around school.

I loved the experiment.  I would of drunk the water but we weren’t allowed to, because we weren't sure if it was safe or not. I also loved making muddy water!!!
